On Sunday, September 14th, 2003, while hurrying to a Deacons of Dixieland job at Victory Park in Lewistown, PA, Deacon John ascended to Gabriel's Dixieland Band where he trades fours with Bix Beiderbeck, Louis Armstrong, and King Oliver. John was the founding force behind the Deacons of Dixieland. In his honor, at his gravesite, a grouping of current and former Deacons played his favorite kind of music. The Deacons pledged to continue his musical ministry.
